Canvas vs. Non-Woven Bags: Which Should You Choose for Your Next Campaign?

If you are sourcing reusable fabric bags for a promotion or retail program, your first decision is usually fabric: cotton canvas or PP non-woven? Both are proven, but they answer different briefs.

Cost and MOQ

Non-woven bags are the volume champions. At 5,000 pieces and above, an 80gsm non-woven shopper typically costs a fraction of a comparable canvas tote, and MOQs start lower because the fabric is always in stock in standard colors. Canvas costs more per unit and dyed colors require Pantone matching runs, so budget more lead time for custom shades.

Durability and reuse value

A 12oz canvas tote easily survives years of weekly use; we load-test our shoppers to 20 kg. An 80gsm non-woven bag is strong but will typically show wear after a year of heavy use. That difference matters: a longer-lived bag means more brand impressions per dollar, and a customer who keeps your bag for three years is advertising for you the whole time.

Print quality and branding

Canvas accepts silk screen, heat transfer, digital CMYK and embroidery, with a premium matte look. Non-woven takes silk screen well but fine detail is limited by the fabric texture — unless you choose a laminated non-woven tote, which reproduces photographic artwork edge to edge.

Customer perception

Canvas reads as "natural, premium, keepsake". Non-woven reads as "practical, everyday". Beauty brands, bookstores and higher-end retail almost always choose canvas; supermarkets, trade shows and mass giveaways lean non-woven.

The bottom line

Choose non-woven when budget and coverage are king. Choose canvas when the bag should outlast the campaign and carry your brand's perceived value. Many of our clients run both: non-woven at checkout, canvas as a paid premium line. Need pricing for both? Send us your artwork and request a project-specific comparison quote.
